A few kilometers outside Dusheti River Dushetis Khevi has been almost completely filled with garbage for several years due to absence of a legal landfill in Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. River Dushetis Khevi eventually flows into Aragvi, through which the garbage reaches Mtkvari. According to Nino Chkhobadze, an expert in environment protection issues, the illegal landfill is continuously releasing toxic substances into the surrounding air and water. Givi Amirkhanashvili, first deputy of the region's governor, states that a newly established service – Union of Landfills will clean the river starting June, after construction of a garbage processing factory near Gldani is finished.
